Cigarette Cards were originally produced in the 1880's and placed in the packets of cigarettes as a stiffener. The first dog set was placed in packs of Old Judge cigarettes by the Goodwin Co. in America in 1890, followed in Britain by Taddy Cigarettes in 1890. Many other dog sets were produced in the following decades until the onset of the Second World War in 1939. After the war, cards were no longer placed in the packs and apart from a very few exceptions, have not since been produced. |
